Overview
Single Tulip 'Red Impression': The Grand Crimson Standard
Single Tulip 'Red Impression' is a monumental variety that sets the bar for classic red tulips. As a distinguished member of the Darwin Hybrid family (and a relative of the famous 'Pink Impression'), it is prized for having some of the largest blooms available in the tulip world. The flowers are a deep, velvety crimson-red that glows with a subtle sheen, opening to reveal a dark, star-shaped base. Standing tall on incredibly robust stems, 'Red Impression' offers a stately presence that commands attention from across the garden. It is widely considered one of the best red tulips for perennializing, returning year after year with the same vigour and intense colour, making it a staple for both landscape professionals and home gardeners.
Key Features
-
Giant Blooms: True to the 'Impression' series reputation, this variety produces massive, goblet-shaped flowers that can reach up to 12–15 cm in diameter when fully open.
-
Velvety Texture: The petals possess a rich, deep red hue with a silky, velvety texture that captures the sunlight, creating a luminous effect in the border.
-
Unrivalled Vigour: Bred for strength, 'Red Impression' features thick, wind-resistant stems that hold the heavy blooms upright even during spring storms.
-
Top-Tier Perennial: This is one of the most reliable varieties for returning blooms. With proper planting, it performs more like a perennial than a typical bulb, offering a great return on investment.
Gardener's Tip
To encourage 'Red Impression' to return for many years, you must treat the foliage with care after the blooming season ends. Do not cut the leaves back immediately. Instead, snap off the spent flower head (deadheading) to prevent seed formation, but allow the green foliage to die back naturally and turn yellow (usually over 6 weeks). This process allows the bulb to recharge its energy stores for next year's "Impression." For the most dramatic visual impact, plant these giants in the middle or back of the border behind lower-growing muscari or white daffodils to contrast with their deep red height.
