Overview
Single Tulip 'Van Eijk': The Deep Pink Standard
Single Tulip 'Van Eijk' is a magnificent and high-performing variety, widely regarded as one of the strongest and most reliable pink tulips in existence. As a premier member of the Darwin Hybrid family, it shares the same giant bloom size and structural integrity as 'Golden Parade'. The colour is a sophisticated, radiant blend—a deep raspberry-pink that can appear almost red in low light and glows with soft salmon undertones in the bright sun. Renowned for its vigour, 'Van Eijk' stands on incredibly thick stems that defy wind and rain, making it an indestructible choice for open landscapes and a long-lasting superstar in the vase.
Key Features
- Complex Colour: Features a unique, saturated hue that bridges the gap between red and pink. This "chameleon" quality allows it to blend seamlessly into hot-coloured borders (reds and oranges) just as well as cool-coloured schemes (purples and whites).
- Darwin Hybrid Strength: Bred for exceptional garden performance, this variety boasts thick, weather-resistant stems. It is often used in large public parks (like Keukenhof) specifically because it stands up so well to the elements.
- Perennial Potential: 'Van Eijk' is famous for its longevity. Unlike many fancy tulips that fade after one season, this variety has a strong tendency to return and rebloom for several years if planted deep and left undisturbed.
- Large Blooms: The classic egg-shaped flowers are substantial in size, providing maximum colour impact even when planted in smaller groups.
Gardener's Tip
Because 'Van Eijk' sits perfectly between pink and red, you can use it as a "Colour Bridge" in your garden design. If you have a border that transitions from dark colours to light ones, place 'Van Eijk' in the middle. It harmonizes beautifully with deep purples (like 'Purple Flag') on one side and soft pastel pinks or whites (like 'Purissima') on the other, tying the whole scheme together into a professional-looking gradient rather than a disjointed mix.
