Overview

Rudbeckia 'Prairie Glow': The Autumn Blaze

Rudbeckia 'Prairie Glow' is a stunning departure from the standard yellow "Black-Eyed Susan." This spectacular variety produces a cloud of starry, bicolour blooms that look like they have been dipped in autumn sunset colours. Each flower features a dark chocolate button eye, surrounded by petals that start as a deep, burnt orange-red at the centreand fade to glowing golden-yellow at the tips. Unlike the chunky, low-growing Rudbeckias, 'Prairie Glow' is tall, airy, and heavily branched, producing hundreds of 5cm flowers on wiry stems. It is the ultimate plant for the "New Perennial" or meadow movement, adding warmth and movement to the garden just as other plants begin to fade.

Key Features

  • Unique Bicolour Blooms: A rare colourway for a Rudbeckia, offering a sophisticated blend of rusty-red, bronze, and gold that changes as the flower ages, creating a multi-tonal tapestry.

  • Prolific Flowering: While the individual flowers are smaller than standard varieties, the sheer quantity is staggering. A single plant becomes a haze of colour, bridging the gap between late summer and the first frosts.

  • Pollinator Magnet: The open, flat flowers are like landing pads for bees and butterflies, providing a vital source of late-season nectar.

  • Architectural Silhouette: Growing tall and branching, it mingles beautifully with ornamental grasses and Asters, holding its shape well even without staking in sheltered spots.

Gardener's Tip

While it is tempting to tidy up the garden in autumn, you should apply the "Leave the Skeletons" rule to 'Prairie Glow'. This variety is a short-lived perennial, meaning it may only last 2–3 years. However, if you leave the black seed heads standing over winter, two things happen: first, they look beautiful covered in frost; and second, they will drop seeds that grow into free new plants for next year, ensuring you never lose this beauty from your garden.
