Overview
Pushkinia var. Libanotica: The Shimmering Striped Squill
Pushkinia var. Libanotica, often affectionately known as the "Striped Squill" or "Russian Snowdrop," is a delicate and mesmerizing jewel of the early spring garden. This bulb produces clusters of star-shaped, porcelain-white to pale blue flowers, each distinguished by a striking deep blue stripe running down the centre of every petal. Blooming early in the season, often alongside Crocus and Snowdrops, it provides a cool, icy elegance that contrasts beautifully with the bare earth of late winter. It is exceptionally hardy and famously easy to grow, making it a perfect choice for naturalising under deciduous trees, in rock gardens, or across grassy lawns where it creates a shimmering carpet of colour year after year.
Key Features
-
Signature Stripe: The defining feature is the "hand-painted" look—a vivid azure-blue line bisecting each icy-white petal, giving the flower a textured, striped appearance that is unique among spring bulbs.
-
Naturalising Champion: Pushkinia is a vigorous self-seeder and multiplier. Once established, it forms dense drifts or "carpets" that expand annually without becoming invasive or troublesome.
-
Early Spring Nectar: As one of the earliest bloomers (often appearing in February or March), it is a vital source of early nectar for waking bees and pollinators.
-
Versatile Hardiness: Native to mountain meadows, it is extremely cold-tolerant and thrives in a wide range of soils, from sun-drenched rockeries to the dappled shade beneath trees.
Gardener's Tip
Because Pushkinia is a petite plant (growing only about 15 cm high), individual bulbs can easily get lost in a large landscape. For the most impactful display, plant them in generous drifts of at least 50 bulbs. A "less is more" approach does not work here; you want density to create that signature "shimmering lake" effect. They pair exceptionally well with Chionodoxa (Glory of the Snow) or Scilla siberica; planting these blue varieties together creates a stunning tapestry of azure, indigo, and ice-blue tones that welcomes spring with style.
