Overview

Tomato 'Pantano' - The Beefsteak of Rome

Grow the legendary heritage variety, 'Pantano' (The Marsh Tomato of Rome). This exceptional Italian heirloom is world-renowned as one of the best-tasting tomatoes in existence. It is easily distinguished by its large, heavily ribbed fruits that ripen to a brilliant deep red, often retaining a touch of green "shoulders" at the stem. Highly valued by gourmet cooks for its rich, complex flavor—a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity—and its thick, meaty flesh, it is the gold standard for slicing, fresh salads, and authentic Roman sauces.

Key Features

  • Authentic Roman Flavour: Widely considered one of the most flavorful beefsteak varieties, offering a rich, "old-fashioned" tomato taste that modern hybrids can't match.
  • Stunning Ribbed Appearance: The beautiful, flattened, and deeply scalloped shape adds a rustic, artisanal touch to any kitchen counter or garden plate.
  • Meaty & Multipurpose: With very small seed cavities and dense, succulent flesh, these tomatoes hold their shape perfectly when sliced for Caprese salads or cooked into thick salsas.
  • Vigorous Heirloom Growth: An indeterminate (climbing) variety that remains productive throughout the summer, providing a generous yield of heavy fruits (up to 250g+ each).

Gardener's Tip

The Secret to Maximum Flavor! To achieve the most intense Roman flavor, allow the fruits to ripen fully on the vine until they are deep red. As an indeterminate variety, 'Pantano' requires sturdy staking or a trellis to support its heavy fruit load. For the healthiest crop, "pinch out" the side shoots (suckers) as they appear to direct the plant's energy into the main stem and developing fruit. Feed weekly with a high-potash liquid fertilizer once the first fruit truss has set.
