Onion Sets 'Sturon': The Reliable, Superb Keeper
'Sturon' is consistently one of the best and most reliable onion varieties available as sets, making it a firm favourite for gardeners across the UK and Ireland. These quality sets produce robust, uniform, globe-shaped bulbs with classic golden-brown skin and crisp, well-flavoured white flesh. Growing from sets bypasses the need for tricky seed germination, virtually guaranteeing a successful crop. 'Sturon' is highly valued for its excellent resistance to bolting and its superb ability to store reliably through the winter months and often well into spring.

Gardener's Tip:
Curing for Perfect Winter Storage
The key to 'Sturon's' legendary keeping quality is proper curing before storage. Plant sets in March or April. When the foliage turns yellow and falls over naturally (typically late August/September), the onions are ready. Lift the bulbs on a dry, sunny day and leave them to dry (or 'cure') in a single layer outside for up to two weeks. If rain is forecast, move them to a dry, airy place like a greenhouse or shed. The necks must be completely dry and crisp before they are ready to braid or store in nets in a cool, dark, frost-free location.
