Gardener's Tip: Shallow Weeding and Full Sun for Best Colour 

To achieve the deepest, most vibrant crimson colour in your 'Red Baron' onions, and to maximize bulb growth, two things are crucial. Plant sets in March or April. Firstly, ensure the plants receive uninterrupted full sun, as this is essential for developing the red pigment. Secondly, onions cannot compete with weeds due to their shallow root system, but deep hoeing can easily damage their roots. Keep the bed perfectly weed-free by shallowing scratching the surface(scuffling) only on dry days. This ensures all energy goes into swelling the beautiful, deeply coloured bulbs.
