Overview
Anemone 'De Caen' Mixed: The Jewel-Toned Florist's Favourite
Anemone 'De Caen' Mixed is a spectacular and vibrant collection, famous for producing large, poppy-like blooms in a dazzling array of rich jewel tones. Unlike the pastel shades of spring bulbs, this mix offers intense, saturated colours—including brilliant scarlets, deep violets, electric blues, and pure whites—all centered around a striking jet-black "button" eye. The petals have a silky, crepe-paper texture that catches the light beautifully. Sitting atop fern-like, deeply cut foliage, these flowers are absolute superstars for the cutting garden, providing bucketfuls of long-lasting blooms that add a sophisticated, artistic flair to any vase arrangement or border.
Key Features
-
Jewel-Box Colours: Features a high-contrast mix of the most famous varieties, often including 'Hollandia' (Red), 'Mr Fokker' (Blue), 'Sylphide' (Violet), and 'The Bride' (White). The result is a vibrant tapestry that looks like a stained-glass window in the garden.
-
Cut Flower Excellence: This is the number one choice for home florists. The stems are straight, and the flowers have an incredible vase life, often lasting up to two weeks indoors if cut when the bud is just showing colour.
-
Flexible Planting: 'De Caen' Anemones are incredibly versatile. They can be planted in autumn for early spring blooms, or in spring for a summer display, allowing you to stagger the colour throughout the year.
-
Compact Charm: Growing to a modest height, they are perfect for the front of borders, rockeries, or patio pots where their intricate centres and ferny leaves can be admired up close without blocking the view of taller plants.
Gardener's Tip
Anemone corms (bulbs) look like small, shrivelled, hard claws when they arrive. To ensure they sprout quickly and vigorously, you must use "The Wake-Up Soak." Before planting, soak the dry corms in a bowl of lukewarm water for 3 to 6 hours (or overnight). You will see them plump up and double in size as they rehydrate. This simple step "wakes them up" from dormancy and significantly improves the success rate and speed of sprouting.
