Overview

Miniature Daffodil 'Sundisc': The Perfectly Rounded Gem

Bring a touch of geometric perfection to your spring garden with Narcissus 'Sundisc', a unique and exquisite variety within the Jonquilla group. A recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this variety is prized by enthusiasts for its incredibly neat, symmetrical form. Unlike the trumpet shapes of larger daffodils, 'Sundisc' features nearly circular, overlapping petals of soft lemon-yellow that flatten out to create a perfect "disc" shape.

At the centre sits a small, button-like cup that starts yellow and matures to a deep, glowing orange, providing a subtle but beautiful contrast. Standing at a modest, compact height, 'Sundisc' is a late-bloomer, perfect for extending the daffodil season well into late spring when other varieties have finished. Its refined appearance makes it a top choice for close-up viewing in rock gardens, patio pots, and alpine troughs.

Key Features

  • Symmetrical "Button" Blooms: The defining feature of 'Sundisc' is its perfectly round, flat flower face with broad, overlapping petals, giving it a neat, tailored look often described as "exhibition quality."

  • Colour Transformation: The blooms open a uniform pale yellow, but as they mature, the petals often fade to a creamy lemon while the central flat cup deepens to a rich golden-orange.

  • Sweetly Scented: Like many Jonquils, it carries a lovely, sweet fragrance that hangs in the air on warm spring days, attracting late-season bees.

  • Late Season Interest: Blooming later than most miniatures (April to May), 'Sundisc' is excellent for bridging the gap between early spring bulbs and the first perennials of summer.

Gardener's Tip

Because 'Sundisc' is so perfectly formed and relatively short (around 20 cm), it deserves a "front row seat." It looks stunning when planted in shallow terracotta bowls placed on a garden table, allowing you to admire the intricate details of the blooms from above. If planting in the ground, place them in a rockery or along a walkway edge where they won't be overshadowed by vigorous spring foliage.
