Overview
Miniature Daffodil 'Quail': The Fragrant Golden Jonquil
Infuse your spring garden with rich, saturated colour with Narcissus 'Quail', a standout variety within the Jonquilla group. This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner is celebrated for its incredible staying power and vibrant presence. Unlike paler varieties, 'Quail' offers a monochromatic punch of deep golden-yellow on both the overlapping petals and the neat central cup.
Famous for its floriferous nature, it typically produces 2 to 4 blooms per stem, creating a lush, full appearance even in smaller spaces. With slightly longer stems and elegant, rush-like foliage, 'Quail' is robust enough for the border but refined enough for pots, bringing sunshine to the garden from mid-spring.
Key Features
-
Abundant Multi-Headed Stems: A prolific bloomer, 'Quail' produces clusters of several flowers on each sturdy stem, ensuring a high flower-count per bulb.
-
Rich, Non-Fading Colour: The blooms are a uniform, glossy bronzed-yellow that glows in the spring sunlight and holds its saturation without fading.
-
Intensely Fragrant: One of the best-scented daffodils available, it carries a strong, sweet perfume that is delightful in the garden or as a cut flower.
-
Robust & Long-Lasting: Possessing a strong constitution, this variety is known for its long vase life and ability to stand up to spring showers better than delicate heirlooms.
Gardener's Tip
Because 'Quail' has slightly longer stems (up to 40 cm) than other miniatures, it bridges the gap between rockery bulbs and border plants. For a striking visual impact, plant them alongside blue Grape Hyacinths (Muscari) or purple tulips; the contrast between the deep gold and the cool purples is a classic gardener’s favourite. They are also exceptional for naturalizing in grass, where they will multiply and return faithfully year after year.
