Overview
Sunflower 'Red Sun' Seeds - The Crimson Beauty
Add a touch of dramatic elegance to your garden with the breathtaking Sunflower 'Red Sun'. Unlike the traditional yellow variety, this striking heritage flower produces velvety, deep crimson-to-burnt-orange petals that surround a dark, chocolatey central disc. Reaching heights of up to 1.5m to 2m (5–6 feet), it creates a magnificent vertical statement in borders and meadows. This variety is famously multi-headed, meaning each stalk produces several stunning blooms rather than just one, providing a long-lasting and sophisticated display of rich, autumnal colours.
Key Features
- Dramatic Crimson Blooms: Features intense, dark red petals that offer a sophisticated alternative to standard sunflowers, perfect for contemporary and cottage gardens alike.
- Prolific Multi-Heading Habit: A generous producer that grows multiple branches, each topped with a beautiful flower head, significantly extending the blooming season.
- Exceptional Cut Flower: The sturdy stems and unique bicolour tones make these a favorite for dramatic, long-lasting floral arrangements and bouquets.
- Nature’s Bird Feeder: As the flowers fade, they develop oil-rich seeds that provide a vital autumn food source for nuthatches, finches, and other garden birds.
Gardener's Tip
Support the Height! Because 'Red Sun' can grow quite tall and produces multiple heads, it is best to plant them in a sunny spot sheltered from strong winds. Use bamboo canes or garden stakes to support the stems as they grow to prevent them from leaning. To encourage even more branching and a bushier shape, you can "pinch out" the growing tip when the plant is about 30cm tall. Keep them well-watered and fed during dry spells to ensure those deep, velvet colours remain vibrant.
