Flowers Seed Californian Poppy
Franchi - Flowers Seed Californian Poppy
Californian Poppy Seeds (Eschscholzia californica): The Golden Cup of California
The Californian Poppy is a radiant and indispensable hardy annual (often treated as a perennial in mild areas), cherished for its effortless charm and brilliant colour. It produces masses of luminous, silky, cup-shaped flowers that range from bright gold and sunshine yellow to vivid orange, beautifully set against delicate, feathery, blue-green foliage. This easy-to-grow flower thrives where many other plants fail, tolerating poor, dry soils. Its blooms close at night and on cloudy days but burst open with the sun, providing continuous, cheerful colour and attracting bees and other beneficial insects.

Gardener's Tip: The 'Direct Sow and Forget' Approach
Californian Poppies have extremely delicate root systems and do not tolerate transplanting well. The secret to success in the UK and Irish climate is to sow the seeds directly where they are to flower as soon as the danger of the hardest frosts is over (March to May). Simply rake the soil lightly, scatter the seeds thinly over the surface, and tamp them down gently—do not cover the seeds as they need light to germinate. Thin the seedlings once established, and then enjoy a resilient, sunny display that requires virtually no further effort.
