Overview

Eranthis hyemalis 'Cilicica': The Golden Snow-Breaker

Banishes the winter gloom with a carpet of gold using our Eranthis hyemalis 'Cilicica' (Winter Aconite) collection. A slightly more refined cousin of the common Winter Aconite, the 'Cilicica' variety is prized for its larger, deeper yellow blooms and more delicately divided foliage. These hardy tubers are famous for their ability to push through frozen ground and even layers of snow to announce the arrival of spring. Each cup-shaped flower sits atop a decorative "ruff" of fern-like, bronze-tinted leaves, resembling an Elizabethan collar. Perfect for naturalizing under deciduous trees or shrubs, they thrive in the dappled shade where few other plants venture this early in the year.

Key Features

  • Snow Piercers: One of the earliest bulbs to flower, often appearing as early as February while snow is still on the ground, providing a vital lifeline of nectar for the very first awakening bumblebees.

  • The 'Cilicica' Difference: Unlike the standard variety, 'Cilicica' features deeply cut, feathery foliage that often emerges with a stunning bronze hue before turning green, adding extra texture to the woodland floor.

  • Shade Lovers: These are the ultimate solution for those tricky shady spots under trees. They complete their lifecycle before the tree canopy leafs out, making perfect use of the winter sun.

  • Honey Scented: If you kneel down to admire them on a warmer winter day, you will catch a faint, sweet honey fragrance that distinguishes them from many other cold-weather blooms.

Gardener's Tip

Winter Aconite tubers can become quite dry and hard during dormancy. To ensure they wake up quickly and root successfully, soak the tubers in a bowl of lukewarm water for 24 hours before planting. They will plump up significantly, signaling they are ready to go into the ground. Plant them immediately after soaking to prevent them from drying out again.
