Dwarf French Bean 'Lingua di Fuoco' Seeds: The Fiery Borlotto Bean

'Lingua di Fuoco' is a spectacular Italian heirloom, famous for its vigorous growth and highly decorative pods. This is a Borlotto type bean, grown primarily for the dried or fresh shelling beans within, though the young pods can be eaten fresh. The short, plump pods are initially green, developing dramatic flames of bright red and magenta as they mature—a stunning sight in the garden! The beans inside are beautifully marbled and retain their excellent, creamy flavour when cooked. This dependable bush-type variety is easy to manage and provides a generous crop of both fresh and shelling beans suitable for the UK and Irish summer.

  • Type: Borlotto shelling bean (used fresh or dried).

  • Flavour: Creamy, rich flavour, excellent for stews and soups.

  • High Yield: Extremely productive with a long harvest window.

Gardener's Tip for Shelling Beans

'Lingua di Fuoco' is best utilised as a shelling bean, similar to a pea, and should be harvested differently than regular snap beans. Plant outdoors in late May/early June. To harvest for shelling, allow the pods to fully swell and dry partially on the plant. The pods will become visibly plump, the red 'flames' will intensify, and the pods will begin to feel papery. You can then shell the fresh beans for immediate use or leave the pods to fully dry on the vine before shelling and storing the dried beans in an airtight container for winter use.
