Dwarf French Bean 'Purple King'
Franchi - Dwarf French Bean 'Purple King'
Dwarf French Bean 'Purple King' Seeds: The Colourful and Productive Snap Bean
'Purple King' is an excellent, early-maturing Dwarf French Bean variety, prized for its vigorous growth and heavy yields of visually striking pods. The straight, stringless pods grow to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) and boast a deep, glossy royal purple colour which makes them easy to spot against the green foliage. Importantly, the purple colour magically disappears when cooked, turning the beans a vivid green, signaling they are ready to eat! This bush-type bean requires no staking and provides a long, reliable harvest of tender, high-quality beans, perfect for the UK and Irish summer garden.
-
Colour Change: Pods turn from deep purple (raw) to bright green (cooked).
-

Gardener's Tip for Maximum Yield
The secret to a maximum, long-lasting harvest of 'Purple King' is consistent and diligent picking. Plant outdoors in late May/early June. Once the beans start maturing in July, check the plants every two to three days. Pick the pods when they are tender and plump but before the seeds swell fully inside. If you leave mature pods on the plant, it signals the plant to stop producing flowers and focus on seed setting, drastically reducing your total yield. Regular picking encourages the plant to immediately set new flowers and pods.
