Dahlia Decorative 'Mero Star'
Dahlia Cactus 'Mero Star' - The Deep Velvety Star
Dahlia Decorative 'Mero Star' is a magnificent variety, celebrated for its large, velvety blooms and rich, dramatic colouration. As a Decorative dahlia, it produces large, flat petals that stack neatly to create impressive, fully double flowers, reaching up to 15 cm (6 inches) across. The petals showcase a stunning blend of deep burgundy and vibrant purple, often deepening towards the centre, giving it a luxurious, star-like appearance. Growing to a robust 1 to 1.2 metres (3.5 to 4 ft), 'Mero Star' is perfect for creating height and drama in the border, and its commanding presence and long stems make it an exceptional, high-impact cut flower.
-
Incredible Contrast: The sharp definition between the rich magenta center and the pale tips makes the flowers look almost hand-painted.
-
Texture King: The spiky "cactus" form contrasts beautifully with the flat faces of daisies or the round heads of hydrangeas in mixed borders.
-
Cut Flower Royalty: With strong stems and long-lasting blooms, this is a florist's dream. Just three stems in a vase creates a full, luxurious arrangement.
-
Long Season: Like all dahlias, it is a marathon runner, blooming relentlessly from July right up until the first frosts of autumn.
Gardener's Tip:
Staking and Stem Protection
Due to the height and the substantial weight of the large Decorative blooms, staking 'Mero Star' is essential to prevent stems from snapping in the wind or heavy rain. Plant out tubers in late May or early June after frost risk. Once the plant reaches about 45cm (1.5 ft), insert a sturdy bamboo cane near the main stem, being careful not to pierce the tuber. Use soft garden twine or strips of fabric to secure the main stem to the cane every 30cm as it grows. This simple step ensures your magnificent blooms stay upright and perfect, ready to be enjoyed or cut. Remember to lift and store the tubers over winter.
