Overview

Large Flowering Crocus 'Jeanne d'Arc': The Pristine Snow Cup

Welcome the first true breath of spring with the sparkling elegance of Crocus 'Jeanne d'Arc'. As one of the classic "Giant Dutch" varieties, this crocus is revered for its size and its pure, snowy whiteness. The large, cup-shaped blooms stand out brilliantly against the bare earth or green grass of late winter. While the petals are a crisp, clean white, they are often touched with a faint whisper of purple at the very base of the stem. The real showstopper, however, is the vibrant, fiery orange pistil in the centre, which provides a stunning contrast and acts as a beacon for early-waking bees. Vigorous and hardy, 'Jeanne d'Arc' is the gold standard for white crocuses, returning year after year to light up the garden.

Key Features

  • Giant Blooms: Unlike the smaller "species" crocuses, this Large Flowering variety produces substantial, goblet-like flowers that make a bold visual impact even from a distance.
  • Pollinator Hero: Blooming in February and March, the bright orange centres are rich in pollen, offering a critical food source for hungry bumblebees emerging from hibernation.
  • Naturalising King: These bulbs are incredibly hardy and perfect for naturalising. Plant them once, and they will multiply freely, forming larger clumps and carpets of white over the years.
  • Weather Resistant: Evolution has built them to withstand the final frosts of winter; the flowers close up tightly at night or during rain to protect the pollen, opening wide again the moment the sun hits them.

Gardener's Tip

Crocus 'Jeanne d'Arc' looks most magical when planted in "drifts" across a lawn. To achieve a natural look, do not plant them in rows. Instead, take a handful of bulbs, gently toss them onto the grass, and plant them exactly where they land. This random spacing mimics how flowers grow in the wild. Just remember not to mow that section of the lawn until the crocus leaves have turned yellow and died back (usually late April), allowing the energy to return to the bulb for next year.
