Beef Tomatoes Marmande
Franchi - Beef Tomatoes Marmande
Transport your vegetable patch to the south of France with the classic Marmande Beef Tomato. This is one of the world’s most famous heirloom varieties, distinctive for its large, irregular, and heavily ribbed (lobed) fruit. The Marmande is rustic and packed with a fleshy interior and very few seeds.
Most large beefsteak tomatoes require long, hot summers. The Marmande is unique because it matures early and sets fruit well even in cooler climates or overcast summers (making it a favourite in the UK and Ireland).
Gardener's Tip: While Marmande is semi-determinate (meaning it doesn't grow endlessly tall like cherry tomatoes), the fruits are heavy! You must use strong canes or stakes to support the weight of the ripening "beef" tomatoes to prevent the plant from collapsing.
