Overview
Daffodils 'Thalia': The Elegant Orchid Narcissus
Bring a touch of timeless sophistication to your spring garden with Narcissus 'Thalia', a heritage variety widely treasured as the "Orchid Narcissus." Unlike the brazen yellows of traditional daffodils, 'Thalia' offers pure, milk-white flowers that exude a sense of calm and grace. Each stem produces two to three delicate blooms, characterized by their slightly reflexed (swept-back) petals and a dainty cup, giving them a distinctively winged, orchid-like appearance. Blooming in mid-to-late spring, this variety is prized for its sweet, spicy fragrance and its ability to naturalise reliably, returning year after year to form elegant clumps in borders, grass, or woodland settings.
Key Features
-
Multi-Headed Beauty: A "Triandrus" type daffodil, meaning each stem bears multiple flowers (usually 2, 3, or even 4), creating a lush, bouquet-like effect from a single bulb.
-
Pure White Elegance: The pristine white colour makes it an essential plant for "Moon Gardens" or for cooling down "hot" colour schemes in the border.
-
Wonderful Fragrance: One of the most scented daffodils available, carrying a lovely sweet perfume that drifts on the spring breeze—perfect for planting near pathways.
-
Heirloom Reliability: Dating back to 1916, this variety has stood the test of time, proving itself as a robust, disease-resistant perennial that thrives in most garden soils.
Gardener's Tip
'Thalia' is the ultimate companion plant. Its pure white blooms look absolutely stunning when planted alongside the deep cobalt blue of Muscari armeniacum (Grape Hyacinths) or Brunnera 'Jack Frost'. The height difference works perfectly, with the graceful white heads of 'Thalia' nodding gently above the carpet of blue below. It also pairs beautifully with late-flowering tulips like 'Queen of Night' for a dramatic monochrome look.
