Overview
The Exhibition Champion: Climbing Bean 'Preisgewinner'
Live up to the name with the Runner Bean 'Preisgewinner'. As the German name suggests ("Prize Winner"), this heritage variety is bred for perfection, producing exceptionally long, straight pods that are a favourite among show-bench exhibitors and serious vegetable gardeners alike. Unlike modern stringless French beans, this is a traditional Runner Bean that offers huge vigour and visual appeal. It produces vibrant red flowers that are highly ornamental, making it a stunning feature in any garden. It is renowned for its heavy cropping potential, producing massive yields of thick, fleshy pods that stand up brilliantly to the cool, damp summers of the UK and Ireland.
Key Features
-
Exhibition Quality Pods: Renowned for producing uniform, extra-long pods (often exceeding 30cm) that remain remarkably straight and fleshy.
-
Prolific Scarlet Blooms: The abundance of bright red flowers ensures a high pollination rate and transforms your vegetable patch into a decorative garden feature.
-
Exceptional Texture: Specially selected for its slow-to-string nature, ensuring the beans remain succulent and "melt-in-the-mouth" even as they grow large.
-
High-Yielding & Vigorous: A robust climber that makes excellent use of vertical space, delivering a continuous and heavy harvest throughout the summer months.
Gardener's Tip
Runner beans like 'Preisgewinner' are originally from tropical cloud forests, meaning they love cool air but hate dry roots. The number one reason for flowers dropping off without setting pods is a lack of moisture at the roots. To guarantee a "Prize Winning" harvest, dig a "bean trench" in winter filled with old newspaper and compost to act as a sponge. In summer, water copiously during dry spells—a thorough soaking twice a week is better than a daily sprinkle. Finally, once the plant reaches the top of your canes, pinch out the growing tip; this forces the plant's energy down into producing pods rather than growing more leaves.
