'Copenhagen Market' Cabbage Seeds: The Early Summer Classic
A tried-and-true Danish heirloom from 1909, 'Copenhagen Market' Cabbage is the standard for reliable, early-season harvest. This vigorous variety produces firm, round, compact heads (typically 1.5–2kg) with crisp, tender leaves and a lovely mild flavour. It's renowned for its uniformity, crack-resistance, and compact growth habit, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens. Harvested in early summer, it is an absolute essential for fresh, homemade coleslaw and salads.
- Early Maturity: One of the quickest cabbages to mature, ready for harvest in mid-summer (from 65 days after transplant).
-
Heirloom Reliability: A time-tested, open-pollinated variety known for its dependable performance and good resistance to splitting.
-
Storage Potential: Stores well for an early variety, though best enjoyed fresh!
Gardener's Tip for Pest Protection
The Cabbage White Solution! The primary pest for all brassicas is the Cabbage White Butterfly caterpillar. To ensure a pristine harvest, cover your rows with a fine insect-proof mesh or netting immediately after transplanting. Keep the netting secured around the edges to prevent the butterflies from laying eggs, allowing your cabbages to grow undisturbed.
