Overview

Begonia Picotee 'Yellow-Red': The Sun-Drenched Jewel of the Summer Shade

Begonia Picotee 'Yellow-Red' is a vibrant and high-contrast masterpiece, celebrated for its enormous, rose-like blooms that seem to glow with the intensity of a summer sunset. Each flower features brilliant, canary-yellow petals that are meticulously outlined with a sharp, fiery-red "picotee" edge. This striking combination creates a theatrical and luminous effect, making the blossoms pop against the plant’s own lush, asymmetrical dark green leaves. Specifically bred for its dense, double-flowering form, this variety is the ultimate choice for bringing warmth, luxury, and tropical brilliance to shaded patios, window boxes, and borders where most other "hot-coloured" plants struggle to bloom.

Key Features

  • Radiant Bi-Colour Contrast: The precision of the red ribbon-edge against the saturated yellow centre creates a sophisticated look that is visible from across the garden.
  • Magnificent Double Blooms: Each flower is packed with layers of silken petals, giving them a heavy, luxurious weight and a classic camellia-like shape.
  • Master of the Shade: While many bright flowers require full sun to stay vibrant, 'Yellow-Red' keeps its neon intensity in partial and full shade, making it perfect for brightening dark corners or north-facing displays.
  • Non-Stop Summer Display: A tireless performer that produces a continuous succession of flowers from early summer until the first frost, ensuring your containers never have a "dull" moment.

Gardener's Tip

Begonia tubers have a distinct shape that tells you which way is up. One side is rounded (the bottom), and the other has a slight "bowl" or concave dip (the top). When planting your 'Yellow-Red' begonias, ensure the hollow dip faces upwards. This is where the new stems will emerge. To get an even earlier display, "start" your tubers indoors on a sunny windowsill in March by placing them on damp compost; by the time the frost has passed in May, you'll have sturdy little plants ready to explode with yellow and red colour!
