Beetroot Detroit
Franchi - Beetroot Detroit
The "Gold Standard" of Garden Beets
If you only grow one variety of beetroot, make it Detroit Dark Red. Since its introduction in the late 19th century, this heirloom variety has remained the world’s most popular beet for a reason: it is dependable, delicious, and adaptable to almost any soil condition.
The Detroit produces perfectly globe-shaped roots with a smooth skin and a rich, deep crimson interior. Unlike inferior varieties, it is famous for its texture—tender and fine-grained with no woody rings, even when the roots grow large.
Here are some of the reasons this is the Beetroot for you!
-
Bolt Resistant: One of the most reliable varieties for resisting "bolting" (going to seed prematurely), meaning you get a guaranteed harvest even if the spring weather fluctuates.
-
Dual Purpose: Excellent for harvesting early as sweet "baby beets" or leaving to mature into substantial maincrop roots.
Gardener's Tip: To ensure your beets are sweet and tender rather than fibrous, keep the soil evenly moist during dry spells. If beetroot dries out, the roots can become woody. For the best shape, ensure your soil is relatively stone-free.
