Overview
Paeonia 'Red Charm': The Award-Winning King of Crimson
Paeonia 'Red Charm' is widely regarded by enthusiasts and experts alike as one of the finest peonies ever bred. This magnificent hybrid herbaceous peony is a consistent award-winner, celebrated for its perfectly formed, deep-red double blooms. The flowers are uniquely structured as "bomb" doubles, featuring a dense, ruffled mound of central petals neatly cradled by large, waxy outer guard petals. Its colour is a true, rich crimson that remains stable and vibrant without fading in the sun. With its exceptionally strong stems and lush, dark-green foliage, 'Red Charm' brings a sense of powerful, regal drama to any spring border or floral arrangement.
Key Features
-
Perfect "Bomb" Form: The architectural precision of the blooms—a tight, rounded center of frilled petaloids—makes this one of the most visually striking and symmetrical varieties in existence.
-
Non-Fading Crimson: Unlike many red varieties that can take on a magenta or purple hue as they age, 'Red Charm' maintains its intense, saturated red from the moment it opens until the petals fall.
-
Superior Stem Strength: Bred for performance, this variety boasts exceptionally thick, woody stems that are much stronger than traditional heirlooms, allowing it to hold its massive heads high even without heavy staking.
-
Early Season Star: As one of the earlier-blooming hybrids, it kickstarts the peony season, providing a bold burst of colour just as the late-spring garden begins to peak.
Gardener's Tip
To ensure your 'Red Charm' establishes quickly, choose its permanent home carefully—peonies famously dislike being moved once planted. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. When planting your bare root, ensure the "eyes" (the small pink growth buds) are pointing upwards and are covered by no more than 3–5 cm of soil. If they are buried too deeply, the plant may grow lush foliage but refuse to bloom. For the biggest, most "charming" flowers, apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as the red shoots first emerge from the ground.
