Overview
Anemone 'St Brigid' Mixed: The Semi-Double Jewel Mix
Anemone 'St Brigid' Mixed is the opulent, ruffled sister to the classic 'De Caen' anemone. This stunning collection is renowned for its semi-double and double flowers, which feature multiple rows of petals to create a fuller, more textured bloom resembling a miniature peony or dahlia. The mix is a vibrant explosion of rich jewel tones—spanning electric blues, intense scarlets, deep violets, magenta-pinks, and crisp whites—all anchored by a dramatic dark central eye. These "crepe-paper" blooms sit atop lacy, fern-like foliage and are prized for their exceptional longevity, making them a top-tier choice for cut flower gardens and colourful container displays.
Key Features
-
Double the Petals: Unlike the single-petalled 'De Caen', 'St Brigid' varieties (such as 'Lord Lieutenant' and 'The Governor') possess extra layers of petals. This gives the flower a "fluffier," more substantial appearance that holds up beautifully in rain and wind.
-
Vibrant Jewel Tones: Features a saturated colour palette that refuses to be ignored. The intense pigments are perfect for adding depth and drama to the front of a border or brightening up a patio pot.
-
Florist Quality: Just like their single counterparts, these are legendary cut flowers. The double layers of petals often mean the blooms last even longer in the vase, providing weeks of colour indoors.
-
Extended Season: By staggering your planting times (planting some in autumn and some in spring), you can enjoy these blooms for months. They are fantastic for bridging the "colour gap" between spring bulbs and summer perennials.
Gardener's Tip
Anemone corms can be tricky to orient because they look like irregular, knobbly lumps. To ensure success, follow "The Claw Rule." After soaking your corms (see the "Wake-Up Soak" below), examine them to find the slightly pointed "claws" or buds. These are the top of the plant. If you can see them, plant with the claws facing upwards. If you can't tell which side is up—don't panic! Plant the corm on its side. The plant is smart enough to send the shoot up and the roots down from a sideways position.
Note on Soaking: Just like the 'De Caen' variety, these corms arrive dry. Always soak them in lukewarm water for 3–6 hours before planting to "wake them up" and ensure vigorous sprouting.
