Overview
Single Tulip 'Golden Apeldoorn': The Ultimate Sunny Gold
Single Tulip 'Golden Apeldoorn' is a majestic and highly popular variety that guarantees a huge splash of brilliant colour in the mid-spring garden. As a founding member of the prestigious Darwin Hybrid family, this tulip is celebrated for its remarkable size, vigorous growth, and its outstanding, uniform rich golden-yellow hue. The massive, classic oval-shaped blooms stand proudly on strong, thick stems, making them highly resilient to wind and rain. 'Golden Apeldoorn' is one of the most reliable tulips for garden performance, offering a bold, sunny focal point and an exceptional, long-lasting flower for cutting.
Key Features
-
Vivid Colour: Offers a uniform, intense, and pure shade of golden yellow that holds its colour without fading, providing incredible luminosity in the spring landscape.
-
Darwin Hybrid Strength: Bred for performance, this variety boasts exceptional vigour. The stems are thick and robust, capable of supporting the large flower heads through challenging spring weather without snapping.
-
Perennial Potential: Darwin Hybrids are the most reliable group of tulips for perennialising (returning year after year). When planted deep and left undisturbed, 'Golden Apeldoorn' often establishes itself for many springs.
-
Massive Blooms: Produces some of the largest, most impressive cup-shaped flowers among all tulip types, creating high-impact displays even with smaller planting numbers.
Gardener's Tip
To keep the huge, bright yellow blooms of 'Golden Apeldoorn' looking pristine for as long as possible, monitor them as they fade. When the flowers begin to drop their petals, cut the entire flower head off (deadhead) immediately, leaving the stem and foliage to die back naturally. This prevents the plant from diverting energy into seed production. Additionally, planting this sunny variety on the west side of a structure (like a hedge or wall) where it gets afternoon shade can subtly extend the life of the bloom by protecting it from the harshest afternoon sun.
