Single Anemone 'Sylphide': The Magenta Masterpiece

Inject a splash of Mediterranean vibrancy into your garden with the breathtaking Anemone 'Sylphide'. A standout member of the "De Caen" group, this variety is famous for its large, poppy-like blooms in a vivid shade of velvety violet-pink or hot magenta. Each flower features a striking jet-black button centre surrounded by a ring of dark stamens, creating a dramatic eye that draws attention from across the garden. Standing taller than the woodland anemones, 'Sylphide' is a superstar in sunny borders and patio containers. It is also one of the world's most popular cut flowers; the stems are strong and straight, and the blooms last for over a week in a vase, bringing a touch of luxury into the home.

  • Vivid Velvet: The petals possess a unique, velvety texture in a saturated hot-pink to violet hue that glows intensely in the sunshine, contrasting perfectly with the dark, moody centre.

  • The Florist's Favourite: 'Sylphide' is bred for cutting. The more you pick them for indoor arrangements, the more the plant is encouraged to produce new buds, extending the display for weeks.

  • Sun Worshipper: Unlike the woodland anemones, 'Sylphide' thrives in full sun. It loves a warm, sheltered spot where it can open its petals fully to the light.

  • Ferny Foliage: The flowers rise above a mound of finely cut, parsley-like foliage that stays low and neat, ensuring the blooms remain the focal point.

Gardener's Tip: "The Claw Orientation"

The corms (bulbs) of Anemone 'Sylphide' look like small, shrivelled brown claws or buttons. They are very hard when dormant and must be soaked in lukewarm water for at least 10–12 hours before planting to rehydrate them. When planting, it can be hard to tell which way is up. The rule of thumb is to plant them with the "claws" or uneven side facing downwards and the flat button side facing up. If you really can't tell, plant them on their side—the plant will figure it out!
