Overview
Onion Sets 'Rosanna': The Attractive Pink-Red Keeper
'Rosanna' is a beautiful and dependable variety of red onion set, known for its attractive colour and reliable performance in the UK and Irish garden. These quality sets produce uniform, globe-shaped bulbs with a distinct, appealing pink-red outer skin and crisp, mildly pungent white flesh, often with light red internal rings. Growing from sets ensures a successful, bolt-resistant crop. 'Rosanna' provides excellent medium-strong flavour for cooking and salads, stores well, and can be harvested early to provide a fresh supply of colourful spring onions.

Gardener's Tip
Bolting (when the onion rushes to flower instead of swelling the bulb) is the most common failure when growing from sets. It is often triggered by sudden temperature changes (e.g., a warm spell followed by hard frost) right after planting. Plant sets in March or April. To prevent this, when you purchase the sets, store them in a warm place (like an airing cupboard or kitchen shelf, around 20∘C) for 1-2 weeks before planting. This heat treatment helps to suppress the flower development, virtually guaranteeing the plant's energy goes solely into producing a large, healthy bulb.
