Overview
Dahlia Pompon 'Nescio': The Crimson Crimson Globes of Perfection
Dahlia Pompon 'Nescio' is a meticulously engineered marvel of the garden, famous for its perfectly symmetrical, globe-shaped blooms in a deep, saturated shade of vibrant scarlet-red. Each flower is a masterpiece of natural geometry, composed of neatly cupped, honeycomb-like petals that curve inwards to form a solid, tactile sphere. Set against lush, dark green foliage, the brilliant red of 'Nescio' appears even more intense, offering a sharp, clean aesthetic that is both classic and modern. This variety is a perennial favourite for exhibitors and designers alike, prized for its exceptional flower count and its ability to maintain its flawless shape and fiery colour from mid-summer right through the first frosts.
Key Features
- Flawless "Honeycomb" Structure: As a true pompon, 'Nescio' produces small, dense, and perfectly rounded heads. The mathematical precision of the petal arrangement makes it one of the most photogenic flowers in the garden.
- Intense Scarlet Brilliance: The colour is a pure, unapologetic red that does not fade in the sun. It provides a powerful "punch" of colour that can be used to anchor a hot-themed border or provide contrast in a mixed bed.
- Prolific and Sturdy: This variety is a "flower machine," often covered in dozens of red globes at any one time. The stems are remarkably strong and wiry, holding the heavy-textured blooms upright even in wind and rain.
- The Ultimate "Long-Life" Cut Flower: Due to the firm, waxy nature of its petals, 'Nescio' has an incredible vase life. Its small, uniform size makes it perfect for structured bouquets, buttonholes, and intricate table arrangements.
Gardener's Tip
To enjoy the most vibrant red indoors, harvest Dahlia 'Nescio' in the early morning when the air is cool. Unlike decorative dahlias, pompon types like 'Nescio' should be cut when they are almost fully open, as they have very little energy to continue opening once placed in a vase. Use sharp snips and place them immediately into water. Regular picking actually tells the plant to work harder, resulting in an even denser bush and more crimson globes for you to enjoy until October!
