Dahlia Pompon 'Little Robert' – A Geometric Masterpiece

The perfect honeycomb spheres that laugh in the face of summer rain.

Dahlia Pompon 'Little Robert' is a delightful addition to any garden, prized for its uniquely spherical and tightly formed blooms that resemble small, colourful honeycombs. These highly distinctive flowers are a wonderful blend of deep magenta-pink, purple, and hints of white, creating a vibrant bi-colour effect that adds texture and intensity to the border. Growing to a tidy 60–90 cm (2-3 ft), 'Little Robert' is an excellent performer, providing a non-stop display from mid-summer through autumn. Its sturdy stems and perfect button-like shape make it a superb and long-lasting cut flower, while its accessible nectar ensures it is a great choice for pollinators.

  • Weatherproof: The tight, ball-like shape means water runs right off. It is arguably the best dahlia type for the unpredictable UK and Irish summers.

  • Cut Flower Gold: This is a florist's dream. The stems are long and wiry, and the flowers last up to a week in a vase.

  • Prolific Bloomer: Don't be fooled by the word "Little"—this plant is a machine. It produces hundreds of flowers over the season, often appearing in sprays of 3 or 4 per stem.

  • No Staking (Mostly): While it still benefits from support, the flower heads aren't heavy enough to snap the stems, making it much lower maintenance than giant varieties.

Gardener's Tip: The Thirsty, Hungry Grower

Dahlias are vigorous plants and will not perform their best without consistent moisture and nutrients. Ensure tubers are started indoors and planted out in late May or early June after frost risk. Once the plant is actively growing in the ground, it is a thirsty feeder: in dry spells, provide a deep watering once or twice a week rather than light sprinkles. Crucially, switch from a balanced feed to a high-potash liquid fertiliser (like tomato feed) once the first buds appear. Feed every 10–14 days right up until the first frost—this routine is essential to keep the spectacular blooms coming!
