Cauliflower 'Verona Tardivo' Seeds: The Winter Harvester
Secure an invaluable harvest during the "hungry gap" months with the Italian heirloom 'Verona Tardivo' (Late Verona). This robust, late-maturing variety is specifically bred to be highly resistant to cold, making it one of the best choices for overwintering in the UK and Ireland. Sown in the summer, it develops into a large, vigorous plant that produces cream-coloured heads of excellent dimensions in the late winter and early spring (February–April). It is reliable, offers a wonderful texture, and is harvested precisely when little else is available.
-
Heritage Variety: A traditional cauliflower from Verona, known for its vigour and dependable late production.
-
Time Saver: Planting in summer allows the plants to establish, meaning less work and worry during the colder months.
- Hunger Gap Harvest: Matures during February, March, and April, filling the crucial time before spring vegetables and summer crops are ready.
Gardener's Tip for Winter Success
Firmness and Feeding! Cauliflowers are heavy feeders and require exceptionally firm soil to produce tight, solid heads (curds). Before planting, tread the soil firmly with your heels across the bed. Throughout the autumn, side-dress the plants with a high-nitrogen feed (like chicken manure pellets or blood, fish, and bone) to build strong winter-hardy plants. This firmness and feeding are essential for avoiding "buttoning" (tiny, premature heads).
