Cantaloupe Melon de Charentais
Franchi - Cantaloupe Melon
'Melon de Charentais' Seeds: The French Gourmet Classic
Bring the taste of sun-drenched France to your garden with 'Melon de Charentais'. This highly prized French heirloom produces small, incredibly sweet and aromatic melons with distinctive grey-green ribbed skin and intense salmon-orange flesh. Renowned globally as the epitome of melon flavour, it is far sweeter and more intensely perfumed than most common supermarket varieties. While it demands warmth, successful growing in a greenhouse or polytunnel is highly rewarding for UK/Irish gardeners.
-
Exquisite Flavour: Exceptionally high sugar content and a strong, complex perfume; widely considered the best-tasting melon available.
-
Aromatic Flesh: Deep salmon-orange colour and firm, sweet flesh that releases an intoxicating fragrance when ripe.
Gardener's Tip for Perfect Ripeness
The Scent and the Slip! Unlike many fruits, Charentais melons do not ripen further once picked. To check for peak ripeness, look for two key signs:
Scent: The fruit should release a strong, sweet, musky aroma.
Slip: Gently lift the melon. A perfectly ripe Charentais will begin to develop a small crack where the stem meets the fruit, allowing it to easily 'slip' or detach completely from the vine with minimal effort.
