Allium 'Globemaster': The Giant King of the Spring Garden

Make a massive statement with the Allium 'Globemaster', widely considered the largest and most spectacular of all the ornamental onions. A hybrid masterpiece, it produces colossal, spherical flower heads that can reach an incredible 20 to 25 cm (8-10 inches) in diameter. Composed of thousands of tiny aster-violet star-shaped florets, these deep purple globes sit atop thick, sturdy stems that defy the wind. Because the flowers are sterile, they do not produce seeds; instead, they put all their energy into maintaining their bloom, making the 'Globemaster' the longest-lasting Large Allium, often keeping its vibrant colour for 4 to 5 weeks.

  • Unrivalled Size: Nothing beats the sheer scale of these blooms. A single stem is enough to stop passers-by in their tracks.

  • Extended Bloom Time: Because it is sterile, the flower heads remain in perfect condition for weeks longer than other varieties like 'Purple Sensation', offering better value for money.

  • Superior Foliage: Unlike many large alliums whose leaves turn yellow and wither before the flower opens, Globemaster foliage tends to stay glossy and green well into the flowering period.

  • Award Winning: Holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, guaranteeing reliable performance in gardens.

Gardener's Tip: Winter Decoration

The beauty of the 'Globemaster' doesn't end when the colour fades. The sturdy architectural structure of the seed head dries out beautifully. Leave the stems standing into late summer and autumn to add structure to your garden beds, or cut them and spray paint them gold or silver for stunning dried indoor arrangements during the winter.
