Overview
Shallots Red Sun
Red Sun is a classic and well-loved shallot variety, originally from the Netherlands and known for its distinctive red-tinged skin. These attractive bulbs produce clusters of flavourful cloves, making them a fantastic choice for both kitchen gardens and allotments.
A medium-early variety, Red Sun delivers reliable harvests of round shallots with rich red-brown skins and a strong, full-bodied flavour that elevates everyday cooking. They perform well in Irish growing conditions across most soil types, making them an easy and rewarding crop for gardeners of all levels.
Perfect for roasting, pickling, or adding depth to dishes, these shallots also offer good short-term storage, so you can enjoy your harvest beyond the growing season.

Gardener’s Tip
Plant shallots in spring in well-drained soil in a sunny position. Space bulbs evenly and plant them so the tip is just visible above the soil surface. Shallots prefer lighter soils but will grow in most conditions as long as drainage is good.
Keep the area weed-free and moderately watered, avoiding overly wet soil. Harvest once the foliage begins to yellow and fall over, then allow bulbs to dry before storing. ‘Red Sun’ is best enjoyed fresh as it is more suited to short-term storage
