Scilla 'Siberica'
Scilla 'Siberica': The Electric Blue Carpet
Create a breathtaking river of blue in your spring garden with Scilla siberica, commonly known as the Siberian Squill. Famous for possessing one of the truest, most intense blue colours in the plant world, these tiny but mighty bulbs are indispensable for early season interest. Each bulb sends up multiple thin stems, each holding 3 to 5 nodding, bell-shaped flowers that hang like brilliant sapphire lanterns. They are exceptionally hardy and are celebrated for their ability to naturalise rapidly. When planted in lawns or under deciduous trees, they spread over time to form a shimmering "blue carpet" that rivals the beauty of a bluebell wood, but arrives months earlier.
-
True Electric Blue: The colour is a piercing, saturated cobalt-blue that is rare in nature. It glows intensely against the bare earth or winter grass, visible from right across the garden.
-
The "Blue River" Effect: These bulbs are champion naturalisers. They spread happily by seed and bulb offsets, eventually merging to create a seamless sea of blue that returns faithfully every year.
-
Shade Tolerant: Perfect for planting under shrubs or deciduous trees. They complete their blooming cycle in the early spring sunlight before the tree canopy fully leafs out and casts deep shade.
-
Early Nectar Source: Blooming as early as February or March, the nodding blue bells are a welcome sight for early foraging bees looking for their first meal of the year.
Gardener's Tip: "The Lawn Tattoo"
Scilla siberica is one of the best bulbs for naturalising in a lawn because its foliage dies back quickly, usually before the grass needs its first heavy cut of the year. For a natural look, lift a patch of turf in autumn, scatter a handful of bulbs underneath, and replace the turf. In spring, the blue flowers will poke through the grass, creating a magical "meadow" effect.
