Overview
Leucojum aestivum ‘Summer Snowflake’
Leucojum aestivum, commonly known as Summer Snowflake, is a graceful spring-flowering bulb admired for its delicate white, bell-shaped flowers tipped with subtle green markings. The elegant blooms hang in clusters from tall stems, creating a soft and natural display that brings movement and charm to the garden.
Flowering from February to March and reaching around 30 cm in height, this variety is perfect for borders, damp areas, and naturalising. Its ability to thrive in slightly wetter conditions makes it ideal for planting near ponds, in woodland gardens, or in moisture-retentive soil, where it will return reliably each year.
Key Features
Delicate Bell-Shaped Flowers: White blooms with green-tipped petals for a refined look.
Early Spring Flowering: Blooms from February to March, adding early seasonal interest.
Ideal for Damp Areas: Thrives in moist soil, perfect for naturalising near water features.
Graceful Upright Growth: Reaches approximately 30 cm tall with elegant stems.
Reliable Perennial Bulb: Returns year after year with minimal maintenance.
Gardener’s Tip
Plant bulbs between September and December, around 15 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. Leucojum performs particularly well in slightly damp conditions, making it perfect for areas where other bulbs may struggle.
For the best effect, plant in groups or drifts to create a natural look. Wear gloves when handling bulbs, as they may cause skin irritation and can be harmful if ingested. Once established, allow plants to naturalise for a low-maintenance and reliable spring display each year.
