Gladiolus byzantinus: The Hardy Whistling Jack

Inject a bolt of electric colour into your early summer border with Gladiolus byzantinus, also known as the Byzantine Gladiolus. Far removed from the stiff, high-maintenance hybrids found in florist shops, this wild species possesses a natural grace and elegance that fits perfectly into cottage gardens and wildflower meadows. It is one of the few gladioli that is fully hardy, meaning it can be planted in the autumn and left in the ground undisturbed to return year after year. In late spring, it sends up slender, arching stems packed with funnel-shaped blooms in a stunning shade of deep, glowing magenta-purple. The flowers feature delicate white flashes on the lower petals, adding detail to their vibrant intensity.

• Truly Hardy: Unlike summer-flowering gladioli that must be dug up in winter, G. byzantinus is tough and frost-hardy, surviving cold winters to bloom faithfully every May and June.

• Electric Colour: The blooms are a saturated, vivid magenta that acts as a focal point in the garden, bridging the "June gap" between the fading of spring bulbs and the arrival of summer perennials.

• No Staking Required: Reaching a manageable height of roughly 60cm with strong, wiry stems, these plants are naturally self-supporting and dance beautifully in the breeze without flopping.

Gardener's Tip

While the flowers are spectacular, the sword-like leaves can look a bit untidy as they fade in mid-summer. To hide this, plant your Gladiolus byzantinus in the middle of a border surrounded by hardy perennials like Geraniums (Cranesbill) or Nepeta (Catmint). As the gladiolus foliage dies back, the billowing mounds of the perennials will cover the fading leaves, keeping your border looking fresh and green.
