Overview

Erythronium 'Pagoda' (Dog's Tooth Violet): The Elegant Woodland Jewel

Bring the enchanting atmosphere of an ancient glade to your garden with Erythronium 'Pagoda'. This award-winning variety is one of the most vigorous and reliable members of the Dog's Tooth Violet family. Each slender, arching stem carries multiple sulphur-yellow, nodding blooms with elegantly reflexed petals that sweep back to reveal a dark, ringed centre—resembling miniature lilies or pagodas. The beauty of this plant extends to its spectacular ornamental foliage; the broad, glossy leaves are beautifully mottled with bronze and brown markings, providing interest from the moment they emerge. Perfectly suited to the Irish climate, these woodland specialists thrive in those cooler, shaded spots where other spring bulbs might struggle.

Key Features

  • Elegant Reflexed Blooms: Each stem produces 2–5 delicate, butter-yellow flowers that hang gracefully, adding a sense of movement.

  • Striking Mottled Foliage: The decorative, marbled leaves create a lush, carpet-like effect on the garden floor.

  • Shade Enthusiast: One of the few spring bulbs that truly excels in partial to full shade and damp, humus-rich soil.

  • Naturalising Potential: Once established, 'Pagoda' will slowly clump up and return year after year, becoming more impressive with age.

Gardener's Tip

Erythronium 'Pagoda' thrives in the dappled shade found under deciduous trees. For a classic parkland look in your own garden, plant a circle of these bulbs around the base of your favourite tree (about 10–15 bulbs). Over time, they will spread outwards to create a stunning yellow "skirt" that returns every spring without any maintenance. Because they prefer soil that doesn't dry out completely, they are the perfect companions for hostas or ferns, which will grow over and protect the bulbs once the Erythronium foliage dies back in early summer.
