Gardener's Tip: The "Hot Water" Trick
Make them last longer in the vase. 'Seattle' looks amazing on the kitchen table, but dahlias can sometimes wilt quickly after cutting. Here is the florist's secret: Cut your stems early in the morning. Immediately dip the bottom 2–3 cm of the cut stems into boiling water for about 10 seconds. Then, place them straight into a vase of cold water. This "shocks" the stem ends, searing them open and allowing the flower to drink more water, keeping those big yellow heads perky for days longer.
