These quality onion sets produce attractive, medium-sized, semi-flat to globe-shaped bulbs with smooth, bright white skin and flesh. Growing from sets is the most reliable way to achieve a harvest in the UK and Ireland, as it eliminates the tricky germination phase and reduces the risk of bolting. 'White Snowball' is ideal for use fresh in salads, cooking, and is particularly good for baking whole.

Gardener's Tip: Correct Planting Depth and Watering

The key to a successful, large, and disease-free bulb harvest is precise planting and consistent care. Plant sets in March or April (or Autumn) in well-prepared, firm soil. Insert the small bulb just below the surface with the pointed tip poking through or just covered—planting too deep can inhibit bulb development. Onions are shallow-rooted and require consistent watering during dry spells, especially as the bulb swells in June/July. However, stop watering when the leaves begin to yellow to allow the bulbs to ripen for storage.
